We begin with the North Pacific because it has the simplest thermohaline forcing of any of the ocean basins and is thus the best basin to first grasp principles of wind-driven circulation. While there is thermohaline forcing in all oceans, and undoubtedly upwelling as a result of the global thermohaline forcing, there are no deep water sources. The currents in the low-latitude western North Pacific are critical to the general circulation. The North Equatorial Current flows westward, bifurcating off the coast of the Philippines to form the northward-flowing Kuroshio and the southward-flowing Mindanao Current.
The first loss of stability of the on-state is via a subcritical Hopf bifurcation rather than a fold bifurcation. This distance between the subcritical Hopf and fold bifurcations increases on increasing CO gh there is a fold nearby, it represents the meeting of two solutions that are both unstable: cf. [22,23].There can be an oscillatory relaxation to the on-state found both in . We present a set of high-resolution global atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulations focusing on the model's ability to represent tropical storms and their statistics.
