We begin with the North Pacific because it has the simplest thermohaline forcing of any of the ocean basins and is thus the best basin to first grasp principles of wind-driven circulation. While there is thermohaline forcing in all oceans, and undoubtedly upwelling as a result of the global thermohaline forcing, there are no deep water sources. The currents in the low-latitude western North Pacific are critical to the general circulation. The North Equatorial Current flows westward, bifurcating off the coast of the Philippines to form the northward-flowing Kuroshio and the southward-flowing Mindanao Current.

The first loss of stability of the on-state is via a subcritical Hopf bifurcation rather than a fold bifurcation. This distance between the subcritical Hopf and fold bifurcations increases on increasing CO gh there is a fold nearby, it represents the meeting of two solutions that are both unstable: cf. [22,23].There can be an oscillatory relaxation to the on-state found both in . We present a set of high-resolution global atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulations focusing on the model's ability to represent tropical storms and their statistics. We find that the model produces storms of hurricane strength with realistic dynamical features. We also find that tropical storm statistics are reasonable, both globally and in the north Atlantic, .

Lecture 5: Atmospheric General Circulation Basic Structures and Dynamics Yes: the three-cell model explains reasonably well the surface wind distribution in the atmosphere. No:the three-cell model can not explain the circulation North Pacific Gyre. Climate is governed by the general circulation of the atmosphere — the global pattern of air movements, with its semi-tropical trade winds, its air masses rising in the tropics to descend farther north, its cyclonic storms that carry energy and .

Atmospheric general circulation model (AGCMs) 3 provide strong evidence that the basic structure of the NAO results from the internal, nonlinear dynamics of the atmosphere.

The observed spatial pattern and amplitude of the NAO are well simulated in AGCMs forced with. The basin-scale circulation pattern simulated by the model agrees with the limited current meter and drifter observations (Reynolds ; Abdelrahman and Ahmad ) and previous model results (Chao et al.

Climate model simulations typically simulate a weakening and shoaling of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) over the course of the twenty-first century (e.g., Cheng et al.

).However, thus far a significant weakening cannot be confirmed by observations (e.g., IPCC ).In the absence of direct observational confirmation, our confidence in coupled.

Model Experiments The North Atlantic Tracer Models General circulation model. The tracer transport models used here are based on velocity, tem- perature, and salinity fields from integrations of the Community Modeling Effort (CME) North Atlantic gen- eral circulation model [Holland and Bryan, a, b].

A thorough understanding of the Pacific Ocean circulation is a necessity to solve global climate and environmental problems. Here we present a new picture of the circulation by integrating observational results.

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) strongly influences the large-scale atmospheric circulation over the extratropical North Pacific during boreal winter, which has an important impact on North American winter climate. This study analyses the interdecadal variability of the ENSO teleconnection to the wintertime extratropical North Pacific, over the period.

An essential element of modern ocean circulation and climate is the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), which includes deep-water formation in the subarctic North Atlantic.

However, a comparable overturning circulation is absent in the Pacific, the world’s largest ocean, where relatively fresh surface waters inhibit North Pacific deep convection.
